IBK fighters perform as the best at the European ICHIBAN Cup 2010

A fully filled sports centre in Breda was the scenery of the European ICHIBAN Cup 2010. Besides the open weight class for ladies and gentleman, the spectators were also able to enjoy the “veteran” class. Because of fighters from i.e. The Netherlands, Germany, Russia, Poland, Switzerland and Spain, this truly could be spoken of an International First Class Tournament. The IBK fighters from the Netherlands who entered were Sammy-Lee Muller and Linda van Heiningen (Ruud Muller Dojo), Patrick Zondag (Frank Scholler Dojo), Simon Schots (Timo Hennekes Dojo Simon Schots had to enter the tatami first and won his first round delivering a good fight- Also the second round Simon began very well, but lost eventually. Patrick Zondag entered the ring as second and joined, due to a typical Patrick Zondag fighting style, the last 16. Sammy-Lee took of very offensive, which resulted knocking out his Belgian opponent very fast. Next, the rounds to join the last 8 commenced. Patrick again fought a tremendous round, who looked like having the upper hand. But unfortunately, he received a very powerful low kick, resulting in not joining the last 8.  Sammy Lee actually did join the last 8 by knocking out his Spanish opponent during extra time. At last it was Linda van Heiningen’s turn. Anybody who knows Linda knows she has to face bigger and heavier opponents, but every time she stands with an unknown Kyokushin mentality, which even brought her the Dutch title last year. Today, it wasn’t any different, with good techniques and spirit she entered against her opponent. Unfortunately she couldn’t make the difference in extra time. For Sammy Lee the tournament wasn’t over yet, in the battle for last 4 he fought a strong opponent from Spain.

The match was fought evenly the first 2 minutes, which resulted in extra time for an additional time of two minutes. Not any difference could be spotted during extra time. As a result the match was won by the Spanish fighter who, weighing 92 kg, was the needed 5 kg’s lighter than Sammy Lee. It looked like, despite of a well fought tournament, Sammy Lee had to go home empty handed. Nevertheless, Sammy Lee Muller was awarded the price for fastest knock out of the tournament. Pleasant surprise. At last, the winner of the tournament was IBK Karateka, the Spanish smasher Daniel Sánchez.
